How Long Is a Flight Reservation Valid for Visa Applications?

FlightForVisa Team6 March 2026

A common concern for visa applicants is how long their flight reservation will remain valid. Unlike a purchased ticket that stays active until the travel date, a reservation (held booking) has a limited validity period — and understanding this is crucial for timing your visa application.

Standard airline reservations typically remain active for 24 to 72 hours when booked directly through airline websites. After this period, if the booking is not ticketed (paid in full), the airline automatically cancels it. This short window is why booking directly with airlines for visa purposes is impractical.

Travel agents and reservation services use GDS (Global Distribution System) bookings, which can hold reservations longer — typically 5 to 14 days depending on the airline and route. Some airlines allow even longer holds for specific fare classes or routes.

The challenge for visa applicants is that processing times often exceed these hold periods. Schengen visa processing takes 15 calendar days on average, UK visas take 3–6 weeks, and Canadian study permits can take 8–12 weeks. Your reservation could expire well before a decision is made.

However, here is an important distinction: embassies check your reservation at the time of submission, not after. Once your documents are submitted and accepted at VFS or the embassy, the status of your PNR going forward is rarely rechecked. The reservation serves as proof of intent at the time of application.

That said, it is wise to keep your reservation active at least until your VFS appointment or embassy submission date. If your appointment is in 3 days, your reservation needs to be valid for at least those 3 days. At FlightForVisa, reservations remain active well beyond the standard airline hold period.

For applicants with longer timelines — especially Canadian and Australian visa applicants — FlightForVisa offers automatic PNR refresh. Your booking is refreshed with a new active PNR before the old one expires, ensuring continuous validity throughout your application process.

The bottom line: time your reservation booking to ensure it is active on your submission date. If your VFS appointment is next week, book your reservation a few days before. If you need longer coverage, use a service that offers PNR refresh to avoid gaps in validity.
