Australia Visa from India: Flight Itinerary Requirements Explained

FlightForVisa Team16 February 2026

Australia's visa system is fully online through ImmiAccount, making it one of the more streamlined processes for Indian applicants. However, the documentation requirements — including flight itinerary proof — still need careful attention.

For the Visitor visa (subclass 600), which covers tourism, family visits, and business trips, the Department of Home Affairs asks for evidence of your travel plans. This includes your proposed travel dates, destinations within Australia, and a flight itinerary showing your entry and exit.

Unlike Schengen embassies where you submit documents at a VFS centre, Australian visa documents are uploaded digitally through ImmiAccount. This means your flight itinerary must be a clean, readable PDF — not a screenshot or blurry scan. The system accepts PDF uploads, and officers review them on screen.

For student visas (subclass 500), the focus is on your CoE (Confirmation of Enrolment), financial capacity, English proficiency, and GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) statement. A flight itinerary is not mandatory but helps demonstrate your commitment to traveling to Australia for study.

Processing times for Australian visas from India can vary significantly — from 2 weeks to 3 months for visitor visas. This makes it impractical to purchase a flight ticket before approval. A flight reservation at ₹499 eliminates this timing risk while giving you a proper itinerary to upload.

Australian immigration officers pay particular attention to the GTE requirement for student visa applicants. Your flight reservation, combined with your SOP and financial documents, should paint a consistent picture of someone who genuinely intends to study in Australia and return to India afterward.

For working holiday visas (subclass 417/462), a one-way flight reservation to Australia is typically sufficient. Since the visa allows stays of up to 12 months with possible extensions, a return flight is not expected at the time of application.

Tip for Australian visa applicants: book your flight reservation to arrive a few days before your course start date or planned travel dates. Arriving with a reasonable buffer shows practical planning. Upload the PDF along with your other documents in the ImmiAccount portal.
