The UK Student route visa (formerly Tier 4) is one of the most popular visa categories for Indian students. With over 100,000 Indian students heading to the UK each year, questions about documentation requirements come up frequently.
Technically, UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) does not list a flight itinerary as a mandatory document for student visa applications. Your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies), financial proof, English language certificate, and TB test results are the core requirements.
However, there's a practical reality that many applicants discover: BLS International (the UK visa application centre in India) often asks for flight proof as a supporting document during submission. Having it ready shows preparedness and genuine travel intent.
Even if not strictly required, a flight reservation strengthens your application in several ways. It demonstrates you have concrete travel plans, it shows the immigration officer you've thought about your journey, and it provides context for your financial documents.
For UK student visas, a one-way flight reservation is typically sufficient since students don't always have fixed return dates. However, if you're on a short course (less than 6 months), showing a return booking can be beneficial.
The timing of your flight should align with your course start date on the CAS. If your course begins September 15, showing a flight arriving September 10–13 makes perfect sense. Arriving too early (more than 1 month) might raise questions.
At ₹499, having a flight reservation ready eliminates any last-minute stress at the BLS centre. Whether they ask for it or not, you're prepared. And if they don't need it, you've only invested ₹499 instead of lakhs on an actual ticket.
Remember: you can fly to the UK up to 1 month before your course starts (for courses lasting 6+ months) or 1 week before (for shorter courses). Plan your reservation dates accordingly.
